With the world around us changing rapidly, investors can often feel overwhelmed by the sea of news and information. Complicating matters is the fact that it’s nearly impossible to know who to trust in the media, making it all the more difficult to discern the facts from fiction. The Steve Gruber Show recently sat down with Terry Sawchuk, founder and chairman of Sawchuk Wealth, for a conversation about the importance of remaining neutral when it comes to your portfolio. Sawchuk remarks that it is best to rely on data-driven decision-making systems. He says, “From an investment standpoint, we have systems that take the emotion out of everything, so we don’t get caught up in these whipsaws.”Sawchuk and Gruber also discuss the changing nature of trade and geopolitics. Sawchuk notes that we are likely “watching the fall of globalization” as countries begin to on-shore their food and energy production. He explains that while globalization can improve supply chain efficiency, it can also create vulnerabilities as we saw with the Covid-19 pandemic over the last two years. Now, with the crisis in Ukraine and resulting sanctions on Russia, we are beginning to see supply chain breakdown of food and energy, which will only add to already-accelerating inflation.
Finally, Gruber and Sawchuk discussed the issue of centralized wealth and power and the effects it could have on our economy. Quoting James Madison, Gruber said, “When the day comes when the wealth of the nation will be in the hands of a few, then we must rely upon the wisdom of the best elements in the country to readjust the laws of the nations to the changed conditions.” As we observe the continued effects of the global pandemic, followed by the recent geopolitical conflict, Sawchuk reminds viewers of the importance of evaluating who you vote for, as elections have far-reaching consequences not only on portfolios but on the society in which we live.
