Will 2022 fair better than 2021 for investors? To gain a proper understanding of the answer to this question, it’s important to not look solely at the markets but also consider the many other facets that impact our financial lives as well. The Steve Gruber Show recently turned to Terry Sawchuk, founder and chairman of Sawchuk Wealth, to learn more about what may impact investors in the new year.
“The last couple years, geopolitics has really been front and center in terms of how the markets are going to function and whether they are going to go up, go sideways or go down. It’s maybe the most important piece,” says Sawchuk.
Sawchuk believes that this year will depend on government and monetary policies as well. However, instead of lockdowns and fiscal stimulus being the main drivers of the market, he thinks this year will be centered around the U.S. Federal Reserve. “I think the low-hanging fruit has been picked and the fate of the markets is going to rest largely on whether the Fed makes policy mistakes this year or not,” he explains.
Unfortunately, the Fed may already be on a less-than-ideal path following its announcement that it anticipates raising interest rates three times in 2022, which could be detrimental for investors.
“My concern is the Fed took a super hawkish stance,” says Sawchuk. “It’s ok for now, but I think they are going to be forced into a situation where the economy is going to start to slow down and they are going to have to make a choice: Do they continue to fight inflation or do they try to head off a recession? And that’s not an easy choice.”
